A tub cut to walk in shower project removes a section of the side wall of your existing tub to create a much lower step-in opening, without tearing out the whole tub. It is a lower-impact option for homeowners in Chicago, IL who want easier entry and are not ready for a full conversion.
What the Project Involves
An installer cuts an opening in the side of the tub, usually the front wall, and finishes the edges so they are smooth and sealed. A new threshold or insert is fitted, the opening is made watertight, and a door, curtain, or shield is added to keep water in. The drain, valve, and wall surround often stay in place.
Whether a cut is possible depends on the tub's material, condition, and structure. Some tubs cut more easily than others, and damaged or weak tubs may not be good candidates. An in-person assessment is needed before anyone can promise a result, and a professional should confirm that the finished opening holds water properly.
When This Option Makes Sense
- You want a lower entry and the tub is otherwise in good shape.
- You want less demolition than a full conversion involves.
- You want to keep the existing wall surround and plumbing.
- Your budget is tighter, or you want to try an accessibility upgrade first.
What Affects the Price
The tub material, the size of the opening, the door or shield, and any repairs to the tub or surround all influence cost. Because the tub stays, a cut usually involves less work than a full replacement, but it also keeps the tub's existing limits, such as its size and layout. Pricing for a tub cut to walk in shower depends on the project and a quote. Check licensing and permit rules for Chicago, IL.
